Primary color experiments
After reading Alan Baker's White Rabbit's Color Book, Kindergarten students experimented with primary colored tempera paints. After the paint dried, students drew and cut ovals and circles to create a white rabbit.

The Velveteen Rabbit
Inspired by the story of The Velveteen Rabbit and the drawing styles of Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse, forth grade students made drawings of their precious stuffed animals.

Third Grade Molas
Kuna women from Panama create multicolored nature inspired panels called molas. Third grade students created cut paper designs inspired by the molas of the Kuna tribe.

Inspired by the Huichol Indians of Mexico and their flood myth, second grade students painted patterned snakes.

Sunderland at the Gallery
Featured at the CalvArt Gallery for the month of October is a group of fifth and first grade students. Fifth grade students created linear machine drawings based on Paul Klee's Twittering Machine. First grade students created hummingbirds using Keith Baker's Little Green for inspiration.

Van Gogh inspired landscapes
Fourth grade students used the pencil drawings of Vincent Van Gogh as inspiration for landscape drawings. Students utilized a variety of drawing pencils to experiment with different kinds of line and value. Oh, and my cat thought the drawings were great, too.

Respecting materials.
One of my biggest pet peeves is broken erasers. Everyone in the art room shares materials and when they get broken apart no one benefits. Let's respect materials and have a great year

Little Green, grade 1
First grade students read Keith Baker's "Little Green" and drew how their hummingbird flew and flew.
