Second grade observational portraits

Second grade students created observational self-portraits. They then colored and painted their drawings. Next, students added a colorful frame that described them on the inside. With black paint, second graders added personal and important details about themselves to the frame.

Kindergarten's White Rabbits

After reading Alan Baker's White Rabbit's Color Book, Kindergarten students painted a picture with primary and secondary colors. During the next class students cut ovals and circles to create a white rabbit for their color painting.

Line Drawings in Grade 4

Inspired by the textural drawings of Vincent van Gogh, students in fourth grade drew landscapes using different kinds of lines.

Kindergarten's first artwork of the year

Students in Kindergarten created colorful mouse pictures inspired by Laura Numeroff's If you Give a Mouse a Cookie. First students drew their mouse, then they added oil pastel and watercolor paint to make it bright.

I am so proud of Kindergarten's first artistic efforts of the year!

Welcome Back

I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer.

We have started the year in art at a fast pace. Already we have talked about several different artists and techniques. We have even begun experimenting with oil pastels and paints in several grade levels.

In the comming weeks we will begin to finish some of our artwork, so check back here, Sunderland Art Spot, for some pictures of great SES student work.

Fifth grade Sumerian inspired sculptures

Stop Motion Animation

Made possible through a grant from MSET (Maryland Society for Educational Technology), Mrs. Sanchez's fifth grade class created five stop motion animations based on a fable, tall tale or fairytale. Students created the characters, props and backgrounds in Art class. Then students manipulated their characters and made their animations under the supervision of Mrs. Sturge.

Abstract Relief Sculptures

The fourth graders created Frank Stella inspired relief sculptures. Their work was also featured a the CalvART gallery during the month of February.



Winter landscapes

Here is a small peak of the first grade winter landscapes. Students drew live models wearing winter clothes and then painted a snowy landscape. The artwork was featured at the CalvART gallery during the month of February.
